Common Mistakes After Water Tank Cleaning in Jeddah and What to Do in the First Few Days

The crew leaving is not the end of the job; what you do over the next few days decides whether the water stays in good condition.

After a cleaning visit most people go straight back to normal use, without realising that pipes, filters and taps still carry leftovers from before the cleaning. That is where small mistakes creep in and undo part of the visit’s value.

We go through the most common mistakes seen in Jeddah homes and buildings and what to do instead during the first week. For the service itself, see water tank cleaning in Jeddah.

In detail

Eight mistakes that keep repeating after a tank cleaning and how to avoid them

We order them as they tend to happen: the first tap, then appliances, then the tank itself, then follow-up.

Mistake 1

Using the water at once without flushing the pipes

After refilling, the tank is clean but the pipes between tank and taps still hold old water and fine sediment. Drinking or cooking with it before that water is flushed out wastes part of the benefit.

Open taps in turn, farthest first and then nearest, and let the water run until it is clear, without tint or smell. In multi-storey villas, flush the ground-floor taps and then the upper ones.

If colour or cloudiness persists after a sensible flush, call the company rather than waiting for days.

Mistake 2

Ignoring shower heads, aerators and filters

Shower heads and tap aerators catch fine sediment that came out of the pipes, so you may notice low pressure or a skewed spray in the first week. A simple clean usually fixes it.

Household water filters need attention too, since they can fill faster than usual after a cleaning. Follow the maker’s instructions for replacement, and see our guide to how home filters relate to tank cleaning.

If you have a water heater, remember sediment can reach it as well; watch for changes in its performance and do not open it up yourself unless you are qualified.

Mistake 3

Opening the tank lid to reassure yourself

A common urge after the service is to lift the lid and look at the result. Each opening lets in the dust that Jeddah air carries, and perhaps an insect or a leaf, and you end up recreating the problem yourself.

Rely on the crew’s photos and the visit record. If you really must look, do it after checking the lid is sound, quickly, with a firm closure, and without lowering tools or wet hands inside.

If reaching the roof is unsafe, leave it. Safety matters more than reassurance.

Mistake 4

Dismissing a smell that lingers in the water

A faint trace of the product used for cleaning may linger after refilling and normally fades once enough water has been drawn off. A strong or unusual smell that stays is a different matter and should not be left.

Do not drink or cook with water that smells strongly, and call the company for another rinse. Do not try to treat it by adding products to the tank yourself, which tends to make things worse.

To tell whether a smell comes from the tank or the pipes, see our guide on tap water colour, smell and taste.

Mistake 5

Skipping a check of the float valve and refill

After the refill, watch the tank over the first two days: does filling stop at the usual level, is anything overflowing through the side outlet, can you hear the pump running without a break? These point to a float valve or valve that needs adjusting.

A silent overflow wastes water and dampens walls, and a pump that never stops wears itself out. If you notice anything, contact the company or a qualified plumber.

We describe the fittings and what is checked in our guide to the float valve, pump and fittings.

Mistake 6

Putting the first water into sensitive appliances

The first water after cleaning can carry tiny leftovers, so it is wise not to use it straight away to fill sensitive appliances such as humidifiers, coffee machines or steam irons. Let the water run first, then use it.

If someone in your home needs special care with water, such as an infant, ask a qualified professional about your water source rather than relying on these general notes alone.

In general, once the water runs clear and without smell after flushing there is no need to worry, and if you are in doubt, ask.

Mistake 7

Not watching the lid and vents afterwards

The first week is a chance to notice whether the lid and vents are sound. If dust or algae come back quickly, a loose opening may be the reason, and we describe those signs in our guide to lid, vent and insulation damage.

Do not patch openings with temporary materials; ask a specialist for a proper repair. Cleaning a tank without a sound lid is like washing a pot and leaving it uncovered.

Also look around the tank for dampness or a leak that shows up after the refill.

Mistake 8

Not recording the date or planning the next visit

The thing most often forgotten after a visit is the record: its date, what was found and what was recommended. A year later you may not remember when the tank was last cleaned, and you end up deciding without a basis.

Write the date in your diary or phone, and set a reminder before summer and before seasons when you host guests. Our guide to reading a service report explains what to keep.

In a shared building, agree who holds the record and who follows up the next date.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to what tank owners in Jeddah ask most.

How long should I flush the taps after a tank cleaning?+

There is no fixed time; the test is that the water runs free of tint, cloudiness and smell. Open taps in turn and wait for it to clear, and if it does not clear after a reasonable flush, call the company.

Should I replace my water filter after cleaning?+

Not always, but watch it, because it may fill faster in the first week. Follow the maker’s replacement instructions, and if the filter was close to the end of its life anyway, replacing it is reasonable.

Is a faint smell after cleaning normal?+

A light trace can linger and fade after flushing. A strong or odd smell should not be ignored; ask for an extra rinse and do not use the water for drinking until it clears.

Should I open the lid to check the tank is clean?+

It is best not to open it without need, as each opening lets in dust. Rely on the photos and the record, and if you must open it, do so quickly, close it firmly and in safe conditions.

How can I tell the float valve is working after refilling?+

Watch for filling to stop at the usual level, no overflow from the side outlet and a pump that does not run continuously. Any fault should go to the company or a qualified plumber.

Can I use the first water in appliances such as humidifiers?+

It is better to let the water run until clear before using it, to keep tiny leftovers out of sensitive appliances. After flushing, normal use is fine.

What should I keep after the visit?+

The visit date, which tank was cleaned, before and after photos, any repair recommendation and the suggested next visit date. These help you make better decisions later.
