Cleaning a Garage or Storage Room: Sorting, Cleaning and Storing Steps

The garage and storage room are the most neglected spots in a house, collecting dust, humidity and old items, and they can become a shelter for insects.

In many homes the garage or storage room becomes a dumping ground: old cartons, tools, temporary furniture and paint tins. Over time dust that enters through doors and openings accumulates, oil stains appear on the floor, and cardboard items suffer from humidity.

In Jeddah, heat, dust and seasonal humidity help some materials degrade and odors develop, while unventilated spaces attract insects and rodents when food scraps or cartons are present.

This guide gives a staged plan: sorting first, then cleaning, then proper storage, with safety points for dust, chemicals and heavy lifting.

Quick Summary

  • Sort before you clean: keep, donate, discard.
  • Wear a suitable mask and gloves when sweeping dust and treating oil stains.
  • Use sealed plastic bins instead of cartons in damp spots.
  • Raise items off the floor onto shelves for easier cleaning and less moisture.
  • Store chemicals and fuel away from heat and children, with good ventilation.
Sorting

Step One: Sort and Empty Before Any Cleaning

You cannot clean a full space, and sorting reduces what you have to put back later.

The four-pile sorting rule

Set aside space outside the room and divide items into keep, donate or sell, recycle, and throw away. Ask of each item: did I use it within a full year, and is it in working order? Broken things, rusty tools and dried-up paint belong in the trash.

Start with a small zone such as a shelf or corner instead of emptying the whole room, especially if time is limited. Photograph box contents or label them clearly so you can find what you need quickly.

Items needing special handling

  • Paint, solvents and pesticides: do not pour them down drains or bin them with normal waste.
  • Batteries and old electronics: hand them to available recycling points.
  • Broken appliances and heavy timber: plan to move them with help.
  • Medicines and chemicals: keep out of reach of children.

Working safely around dust and heavy loads

Accumulated dust in storage areas can irritate the nose and chest, so use a suitable mask and gloves and ventilate by opening the doors. Do not sweep dry dust vigorously; lightly mist it with water or vacuum, then mop damp.

Lift heavy items with proper technique or a second person, and watch out for sharp tools, nails and ladders used to reach high shelves.

Cleaning

Cleaning Walls, Floor and Oil Stains

Work from top to bottom and from dry to wet.

Dust, cobwebs and the floor

Start with the ceiling and corners using a long-handled brush, then shelves and walls, then the floor from the inside toward the door. After light sweeping or vacuuming, mop the concrete floor with a suitable floor cleaner and a brush.

Pay attention to floor corners near walls and under shelves, where dust residue and dead insects collect. Make sure everything is completely dry before restocking.

For oil stains on concrete

  • Cover the stain with an absorbent (sawdust or fine sand), leave it a while, then sweep it up.
  • Use a degreaser suited to floors and scrub with a stiff brush.
  • Rinse and dry well, and do not mix products.
  • Old stains may stay faint and not fully disappear.

Humidity, odors and insects

If you notice a musty smell or mold on the walls, look for the moisture source such as a leak or condensation, improve ventilation and move paper items. Shelves raised a few centimeters off the floor help air circulate.

Do not store food or animal feed in the garage, and stacked cartons attract insects, so replace them with sealed plastic bins. If insects or rodents keep appearing, bring in a pest control specialist.

Storage

Cover with an absorbent and sweep it up, use a floor degreaser and a brush, then rinse and dry. Old stains may stay faint.

Do I need a mask for cleaning dust?+

A suitable mask and gloves are recommended for accumulated dust, with the space ventilated and aggressive dry sweeping avoided.

What is the best way to protect items from humidity?+
