Cleaning Courtyard and Terrace Furniture and Outdoor Cushions and Protecting Them from Sun, Dust and Salty Air in Jeddah

Outdoor furniture in Jeddah faces harsh sun, dust and salty air, and without simple care it fades, its cushions crack and mould appears.

Outdoor seating in courtyards, terraces and gardens is part of life in Jeddah homes, but it is the furniture most exposed to harsh conditions: direct sun, dust and storms, humidity and salty coastal air that gets into joints and fixings, and sometimes sudden rain that leaves marks and soaks cushions.

This guide covers how to clean each material separately: wood, plastic, aluminium, synthetic rattan, outdoor fabrics and cushions, with a seasonal schedule for cleaning and protection, common mistakes that ruin furniture, and how to store it before storms or in humid seasons.

It is general care and cleaning advice. The maker's instructions are the reference for each material, and some fabrics and treated woods tolerate products that others do not.

Villa cleaning in Jeddah

Quick Summary

  • Sort furniture by material: wood, plastic, aluminium, rattan and fabric.
  • Clean with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush, rinse well and dry in shade.
  • Never leave cushions damp and covered; mould starts within days in humidity.
  • Wash salt and dust from metal frames regularly to slow rust and corrosion.
  • Cover or bring furniture in before storms, and avoid airtight plastic covers that trap moisture.

Sun and heat

Ultraviolet rays fade fabric and plastic and make them brittle over the years, and high heat dries out wood so it cracks and softens some resins and plastics. The problem is worse on dark surfaces that absorb more heat.

Alternating strong heat by day with humidity at night also stresses joints, welds and cushions.

Effects of sun

  • Fading colours and cracking plastic
  • Dry, splitting wood
  • Stiff, tearing fabric
  • Dulling of glossy surfaces

Dust, salty air and humidity

Fine dust settles in the weave of fabric and rattan and is hard to remove with a dry wipe, turning sticky with humidity. Salty air leaves a white film on metal and speeds up rust at joints and screws.

Moisture trapped inside cushions and covers produces a musty smell and black spots that can show on fabric within days if the cushion stays wet.

Sources of trouble

  • Dust clinging to fabric and rattan
  • Salt speeding up rust
  • Cushions holding moisture
  • Sudden rain leaving marks
  • Leaves and sand in the joints

What differs between materials

Wood needs moisturising and sometimes oiling, aluminium does not rust but oxidises and changes colour if neglected, and iron needs a protective coating. Plastic needs protection from the sun, and rattan needs brushing and washing of accumulated dust.

That difference changes the cleaning method and tools, so never assume that what cleans a plastic chair suits wood.

Questions before you start

  • What is the frame made of?
  • Is the fabric made for outdoor use?
  • Is the wood painted or oiled?
  • Are there instructions from the maker?

From dust to rinse

Start by removing dust and leaves with a broom or soft brush, then wash the frame with warm water and mild soap using a soft brush, working small areas at a time. Rinse with plenty of fresh water, then dry with a cloth or leave the piece to dry in shade.

If the floor below the furniture would be affected by water, use a damp cloth instead of a hose, and avoid high pressure on rattan and wood, which can break the fibres.

Washing order

  • Remove leaves and dry dust
  • Wash with warm water and soap
  • Scrub the joints with a soft brush
  • Rinse with fresh water
  • Dry in shade

Joints and fixings

The joins between slats and the metal joints collect salt and sand, and are the places most prone to rust. Use an old toothbrush to clean them, then rinse and dry well.

After drying you can wipe the metal joints with a lightly oiled cloth to reduce corrosion, taking care not to leave oil on surfaces that hands or fabric touch.

Important details

  • A toothbrush for the joints
  • Dry the joints fully
  • A little light oil for metal if needed
  • Check corroded screws

Washing and drying cushions

Read the cushion label: if the cover comes off, wash it as directed in lukewarm water; if not, use mild soap and a soft brush with a damp cloth. Do not over-wet, because foam filling holds water for a long time.

After washing, dry the cushion in ventilated shade, turning it over, and do not put it back until it is completely dry. Foam takes longer, so press it to squeeze the water out.

Steps

  • Remove the cover if possible
  • Wash as the label says
  • Press the filling to remove water
  • Dry in ventilated shade
  • Never close it up damp

Mould and smell

If dark spots or a musty smell appear, wash the cover in warm water and soap, and use a diluted vinegar solution on fabric that allows it after testing a hidden patch, then dry briefly in the sun. Do not mix vinegar with bleach.

If mould persists in the filling itself, replacing it may be better than recycling it.

Treating mould

  • Test a hidden patch first
  • Dry in short sun
  • Do not mix cleaners
  • Replace mouldy filling

Covers and storage

Use breathable covers made for the job, and do not wrap furniture in airtight nylon, which traps moisture and causes mould. In dust and storm seasons bring cushions and small pieces into a closed space.

If you cannot bring them in, tie and cover them securely so the wind does not carry them away.

Protection rules

  • Breathable covers
  • Bring cushions in during storms
  • Secure light pieces
  • Keep furniture off wet ground

A seasonal schedule

Weekly: dust and wipe surfaces. Monthly: a light wash of the frame and a check of the cushions. Each season: a full wash, oiling wood and checking joints and screws. After every storm or rain, clean and dry.

If you have a large courtyard and a lot of furniture you can contact us to arrange a full clean within our listed services in Jeddah.

Reminders

  • Weekly dusting
  • Light monthly wash
  • Seasonal care for wood and metal
  • Clean after storms

Washing and protection mistakes

Common mistakes are high-pressure water on rattan and wood, bleach on coloured fabric, leaving cushions wet under a plastic cover, and neglecting joints and fixings. Wire brushes on aluminium or plastic scratch the surface and trap dirt.

The biggest mistake is waiting for rust or mould to get worse instead of treating it early.

Avoid

  • High-pressure water
  • Bleach on coloured fabric
  • Airtight plastic over damp furniture
  • Wire brushes on soft surfaces

Practical tips

When buying, choose fabrics and frames made for outdoor use, put furniture under a canopy where possible and photograph the condition at the start of the season to compare later. Set aside a corner to store cushions and covers during storms.

See our guide to cleaning the courtyard and terrace after dust if you also need the floors and entrances around it cleaned.

Simple improvements

  • Choose outdoor-rated materials
  • Place furniture under a canopy
  • Photos at the start of the season
  • A storage corner for cushions
FAQ

Common questions about humidity and mold in Jeddah

Short answers to what homeowners ask most.

How often should I clean courtyard furniture in Jeddah?+

Dust weekly, give it a light wash monthly, a full wash each season and again after every storm or rain. Do it more often near the coast or if the furniture sits in direct sun.

How do I stop mould on outdoor cushions?+

Never leave them wet; dry them thoroughly in ventilated shade before storing, bring them in during storms and humid seasons, and use breathable covers rather than airtight nylon.

Can I use bleach on the fabric?+

Not advised on coloured fabric because it fades and weakens it. If necessary, test a hidden patch and follow the maker's label at a suitable dilution.

How do I deal with rust on iron furniture?+

Remove rust early with a soft brush and light sanding, wipe and dry, apply a protective coating made for outdoor metal and check joints and screws.

Can I pressure-wash rattan?+

No; pressure breaks the fibres and opens the joints. Use a soft brush with water and mild soap, then rinse gently and dry fully.

How do I protect wood from sun and salt?+

With shade or a canopy, by oiling or coating the wood each season as its type needs, washing off salt with fresh water and drying it well.

Is covering furniture with nylon a good idea?+

Not if it is airtight, as it traps moisture and causes mould. Use a cover made for the purpose that allows ventilation and fix it well against wind.
