AC Still Weak After Cleaning in Jeddah: A Check List and When the Cause Is Not Dust

Cleaning only deals with dirt. If cooling stays weak, other causes are worth knowing about before you call anyone.

Many people expect an air conditioner to bounce back to full strength the moment it is cleaned, and when it does not they assume the cleaning was poor. Sometimes that is true, but often the cause has nothing to do with dust.

We offer a check list that starts with what you can test safely, then explains when refrigerant, electrical parts or the size of the room are to blame, and why fixing those calls for a qualified repair technician. For cleaning, see AC cleaning in Jeddah.

Technician cleaning an indoor air conditioner unit in a Jeddah home

Quick Summary

  • Start with settings, the filter, the room windows and door seals.
  • Check the airflow and temperature coming out of the indoor unit.
  • Do not open electrical parts or add refrigerant yourself.
  • Refrigerant, compressor and electrical faults need a qualified technician.
Quick table

The symptom, a likely cause and what to do

The table orders possibilities from simplest to most involved; begin at the first row and work down.

SymptomPossible causeWhat to check safelyWhen to call a repair technician
Air comes out but is not coldWrong settings, a room too big for the unit, or intense summer heatThe set temperature, fan, mode and the room’s windowsIf the unit runs for hours with no drop in temperature
Weak airflowDirty filter or coil, or a fan that needs attentionThe filter, air outlets and anything blocking the unitIf weakness persists after the filter and coil are clean
Ice forming on the unitRestricted airflow or a refrigerant problemSwitch off, let the ice melt, check the filterIf the ice returns after cleaning

In detail

Eight checks to run when cooling stays weak after cleaning

We start with the easiest and most common and end with what needs a qualified repair technician.

Check 1

First rule out the cleaning itself

Before assuming a fault, ask yourself: was cooling good before the problem, and how did it change after the cleaning? If weakness began right after the visit, call the crew and tell them, because a filter may not have been refitted firmly or a panel may not have gone back properly.

If cooling was equally weak before and after the cleaning, dust is probably not the cause. Cleaning handles dirt only; it does not fix refrigerant or electrical parts.

Cleaning can also make a hidden problem more obvious: once the dust is gone you may realise the room is simply bigger than the unit can handle.

Check 2

Settings, mode and fan speed

Check the remote: is the mode set to cool rather than fan or dry, is the set temperature low enough, is the fan at a suitable speed? Setting mistakes are more common than we like to think, especially after changing the batteries.

Some units have an energy-saving or sleep mode that eases cooling on purpose. Try normal mode and watch the temperature of the air coming out after a few minutes.

This check costs nothing and solves a fair share of cases.

Check 3

The filter and the air outlets

A dirty or wrongly fitted filter will restrict airflow even after the coil has been cleaned. Take it out, look at it and refit it firmly, make sure it is completely dry, and never run the unit without it.

Then look at the outlets: is a curtain or furniture blocking the air in front of the unit, are the louvres set at a sensible angle? Blocked air weakens the feeling of cooling.

See our guide to <a class="underline" href="/en/guides/ac-filter-cleaning-before-summer-jeddah-guide">cleaning the AC filter before summer</a> for the safe way to check.

Check 4

The room itself: size, insulation and windows

The unit may be sound while the room needs more capacity: large sun-facing windows, an exposed roof, an open kitchen, more people, or lights and appliances that give off heat. In Jeddah the need roughly doubles in summer.

Check that windows and doors seal well, that curtains reduce incoming sun, and that the room door is not left open onto a hot corridor.

If the unit was never the right size for the room, cleaning will not cure it, and the answer is to reassess the capacity with a specialist.

Check 5

Ice forming on the indoor unit

Ice on the coil or pipes deserves attention. It may stem from poor airflow, low refrigerant or a sensor fault. Ice cuts cooling and then melts, so water drips.

Switch the unit off and let the ice melt completely, check the filter and air outlets, then try again. If the ice returns, do not keep repeating it; call a repair technician.

Our guide to a <a class="underline" href="/en/guides/ac-drain-line-clogged-water-dripping-indoor-unit-jeddah-guide">clogged AC drain and dripping water</a> helps you tell ice apart from a drain blockage.

Check 6

The outdoor unit and condenser

If the outdoor unit is not running, its fan is not turning, or it makes unusual noises, the problem is most likely in the condenser, compressor or electrical parts. Do not try to open it yourself.

All you can do is confirm nothing is blocking the space around it and that thick dust has not built up, then call a repair technician.

If bird droppings or heavy dirt have collected on it, see our guide to <a class="underline" href="/en/guides/pigeon-bird-droppings-balcony-ac-outdoor-unit-safe-cleaning-jeddah">cleaning the outdoor unit safely</a>.

Check 7

Refrigerant and electrical parts: what you should not do yourself

Low or leaking refrigerant, a failing compressor or a faulty capacitor are common reasons for persistent weak cooling. They call for gauges, experience and work with chemicals and electricity, so no experimenting.

Do not buy refrigerant to top up the unit yourself and do not open the electrical panel. Ask a qualified repair technician to check pressure and current and pin down the fault.

Our advertised service is AC cleaning, so if the problem turns out to be refrigerant or electrical we will point you to a qualified repair technician rather than promise something we do not offer.

Check 8

The final check list and who to call

Work in order: settings, filter, air outlets, room and windows, ice, outdoor unit. If one step solves it, stop; if not, gather notes: when the weakness began, whether the sound changed, whether ice or dripping appeared.

If the weakness began right after a recent cleaning, contact the crew that cleaned the unit. If the symptom points to refrigerant or electrical trouble, call a qualified repair technician directly.

Either way, keep notes and photos, as they shorten the technician’s diagnosis time and can reduce the cost.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to what tank owners in Jeddah ask most.

Why is my AC still weak after cleaning?+

The cause may not be dirt: wrong settings, a room bigger than the unit can handle, low refrigerant, or a compressor or condenser fault. Start with the simple checks, then call a repair technician if weakness continues.

Can I add refrigerant to my AC myself?+

It is not advised; it needs gauges and experience, and mishandling can damage the unit or be dangerous. Ask a qualified repair technician to check the pressure and decide what is needed.

What does ice on the indoor unit mean?+

It can mean poor airflow, a refrigerant problem or sensor trouble. Switch off, let it melt and check the filter; if ice returns, call a repair technician and do not keep restarting the unit.

Could the filter still be the cause after cleaning?+

Yes, if it was not refitted firmly, is still damp or retains dirt. Take it out, check it, and put it back dry and secure, and never run the unit without it.

Does room size really affect cooling?+

Yes. A large room, one exposed to the sun, or one open to a kitchen or hot corridor needs more cooling capacity. If the unit is weaker than required, cleaning will not solve it.

Do you repair AC refrigerant and electrical faults?+

Our advertised service is AC cleaning. If the problem turns out to be refrigerant or electrical, we advise using a qualified repair technician.

When should I call the crew that cleaned the AC?+

If weakness, noise or dripping started right after the cleaning visit, tell them what you noticed with photos if possible, so they can check whether a filter or panel was not put back as it was.

AC still weak and unsure of the first step?

Send us what you notice, the type of unit and its approximate age, and your location in Jeddah, and we will point you to the right step.
