Cleaning Home Appliances: Fridge, Oven, Washing Machine and Dishwasher Step by Step

A safe monthly checklist for the appliances we use daily

Home appliances work quietly but dirt and odors build up over time: a fridge with grimy rubber seals, an oven with burnt fat, a washing machine with a damp smell in its door, and a dishwasher with a full filter. In Jeddah, humidity and heat give odors an extra push.

Quick answer: unplug the appliance before cleaning inside, read the manufacturer’s manual, use mild soap and water or baking soda in place of harsh chemicals, dry rubber parts and doors, and never mix cleaners. Appliances with faults or exposed wiring need a technician.

This guide is general and does not replace the manufacturer’s instructions. We give an order of work for each appliance with warnings and a sensible frequency.

Key points

  • Unplug before any inside cleaning and let hot parts cool
  • Follow the manual and never mix cleaners
  • Clean and dry the rubber seals to stop odor and mold
  • Do not use strong chemicals on food-contact surfaces
  • Faults and exposed wires need a technician, not cleaning

Electricity and cleaners

Unplug the appliance before cleaning inside and wait for the oven and hot parts to cool. Do not spray water directly onto control panels or electrical openings; wipe them with a slightly damp cloth.

Avoid sharp tools and abrasive products on coated surfaces or glass, and never mix bleach with acids or ammonia.

Preparation

  • Gloves and clean cloths
  • Mild soap and baking soda
  • A soft brush and a non-scratch sponge
  • The manufacturer’s manual if available

Food contact

Surfaces that touch food, such as fridge shelves and oven trays, need a good rinse after cleaning so no cleaner residue remains. Prefer products suited to food-contact surfaces.

Make sure parts are dry before they go back, since moisture causes odor and lets mold grow.

Remember

  • Rinse well after the cleaner
  • Dry parts before refitting
  • Avoid strongly perfumed products
  • Ventilate while working

The smell comes before the stain

A musty, damp-earth smell is an earlier signal than the stain itself. If you notice it when opening a room or wardrobe after a long closure, look for the source rather than covering it with air freshener; fragrance hides the warning without fixing the cause.

Watch paper, books and cardboard boxes too, since they absorb moisture quickly and act as early indicators. Paint that bubbles or flakes, or white salt crust on a wall, usually points to rising damp or a leak rather than a surface stain.

Telling mold from dirt and scale

Not every dark mark is mold. Dirt, smoke and soap residue can look similar. A simple test: wipe a small area with a damp cloth and a mild household cleaner. If it lifts easily it is probably dirt; if it returns quickly in the same place with a damp smell, suspect mold.

White, rough deposits in bathrooms and kitchens are mineral scale from water, not mold, and need a different treatment.

Fridge and freezer

Move perishable food to a cool place, empty the shelves, remove removable drawers and wash them in water with mild soap. Wipe the inner walls with a light baking soda solution and clean the rubber seal with a slightly damp cloth.

Do not forget the drip tray or the drain opening at the back if there is one; they are common sources of odor. Dry everything and then put the food back.

Common odor spots

  • The rear drain opening
  • The rubber door seal
  • Vegetable drawers
  • Liquids left on shelves

Oven and microwave

Once the oven is cool, take out the racks and soak them in soapy water. For burnt fat, a paste of baking soda and water left for a while and then wiped can help, following the manufacturer’s guidance, especially for self-cleaning ovens.

In a microwave, heating a bowl of water inside softens residue so it can be wiped with a clean cloth; do not run it empty.

Cautions

  • Do not use strong cleaners on coated surfaces
  • Remove the racks before cleaning
  • Ventilate the kitchen while working
  • Do not press on the glass

Washing machine and dishwasher

On a front-loading washer, clean the door seal well and dry it, take out the detergent drawer and wash it, and check the lower filter if it can be removed. Leave the door open after use so parts dry and the smell stays down.

For a dishwasher, take out the filter and clear food residue, wipe the spray arms, and run an empty cycle with a dedicated product or as the manual advises.

To prevent odor

  • Leave the door open after washing
  • Do not leave wet clothes inside
  • Clean the filter monthly
  • Wipe the seal after use

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about cleaning home appliances

General answers that always defer to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Should I unplug the fridge when cleaning it?+

It is better for a full clean, moving perishable food to a cool place. A quick wipe of the shelves does not always require it.

Is baking soda safe for every appliance?+

It suits many interior surfaces in a light concentration, but avoid it on delicate or coated surfaces and follow the manual.

How do I get rid of the washing machine smell?+

Clean the seal, drawer and filter, leave the door open after washing, and try a cleaning cycle suited to your machine.

Should I use vinegar in the washing machine?+

Some manuals recommend it and others warn against it because of its effect on seals, so read your machine’s manual first.

Can I clean an oven with strong cleaners?+

Ovens vary in material and some do not tolerate strong chemicals. Check the manual and prefer gentler options.

How often should I clean the fridge?+

Monthly suits most homes, wiping spills as soon as they happen.

Is appliance cleaning part of a home cleaning service?+

It depends on what is agreed, so mention the appliances you want when you contact us so the time can be planned.

What if the appliance has a fault?+

Cleaning will not fix it. Ask a technician who specializes in that appliance.

Want the kitchen and appliances cleaned within a full clean?
